Benigno De Guzman Casayuran was hailed as the ultimate champion of the GameZone Tablegame Champions Cup.
But how did he fare against the other 92 competitors hoping to carve their mark and get a share of the 10 million prize pool?
The 62-year-old from Candelaria, Quezon Province, had to go through rigorous online qualifiers.
The 93 qualified participants of the GTCC: Summer Showdown came from the Tongits Multi-Table Tournament from April 25 to May 16.
They battled against countless aspiring players from all across the country and reached the leaderboards to receive qualifying tickets.
One of them is Benigno, who was able to go through the group stages of the competition.
But was relegated to the lower bracket in the second phase of the promotion round.
After this stage, Benigno showed his tongits mastery and successfully etched his name among the semifinalists.
But the tournament’s title remains far off, as he will battle against fellow experts for three names who will advance to the finals.
Six semifinalists were eliminated, and fortunately, Benigno was not among them, alongside Ryan Dacalos and Cesha Myed Tupas.
They fiercely clashed in the finals, where Benigno was named the GTCC champion.
The inspiration of the champion
Behind Benigno’s success is a heartwarming story of inspiration, perseverance, and overwhelming support from the individual who held him dearest in his life.
More than a Tongits champion and a GTCC players, Benigno is also a loving husband of someone who is going through a major challenge.
His wife is currently battling stage 2 cancer, and due to this circumstance, he was almost denied a chance at GTCC.
Personally, Benigno cannot fund his journey, but that’s where his support steps up.
His close friends, relatives, and family members contributed money for his voyage, and what better payback was a championship and a five-million grand prize?
Benigno will allocate his winnings to fund his wife’s chemotherapy and possibly join him to travel across the country.
The other winners of the GTCC
Aside from the champion, who claimed a 5 million grand prize, the runner-up and third placer had also received substantial rewards.
Ryan Dacalos, a 38-year-old player from Lipa City, Batangas, was able to stay behind Benigno.
He sits beside the champion as the runner-up of GTCC.
He secured a significant prize of 1 million as the 1st place winner in the competition.
According to him, he plans to divide his prize for his daughter’s college education alongside a small business opportunity through a sari-sari store.
Meanwhile, finishing in the top 3 is a 37-year-old Cesha Myed Tupas from Rizal.
She claimed 488,000 that she will use to pay off loans and contribute to the renovation of their home.
