GTCC Tongits: The First Offline Tournament

In a historic and electrifying moment last June, GameZone’s Tablegame Champions Cup (GTCC Tongits) made its highly anticipated offline debut,

Staging the first-ever in-person Tongits Summer Showdown and marking a pivotal turning point in the Filipino gaming scene.

Held from June 24 to 28, 2025, this monumental event proved that GTCC Tongits,

A beloved and deeply rooted Filipino top stage for card games is more than just a pastime;

It’s a competitive discipline deserving of national recognition.

After one years of hosting wildly successful digital tournaments,

GameZone transitioned from the virtual space to the physical stage,

Uniting the country’s top players under one roof in Metro Manila for a spectacle of skill, nerve, and national pride.

For those who missed it, the offline GTCC Tongits Summer Showdown was more than just another tournament

It was a celebration of culture, community, and the enduring appeal of a classic game reimagined for the modern era.

From Online Giants to Real-World Legends

GameZone had long established itself as the leading digital card platform online gaming in the Philippines,

Especially with its record-breaking Tongits Multi-Table Tournaments that spanned the archipelago.

But June 2025 marked the first time players traded their screens for felt tables, and avatars for eye contact.

This shift brought a thrilling new dimension to competitive play. Gone were the digital cues

Now, strategy included reading facial expressions, interpreting body language, and engaging in high-stakes mind games across the table.

The atmosphere in the venue was electric, and the silence before each move was often louder than the cheers that followed a big win.

For many, the event felt like a return to the game’s origins—wooden tables, tight-knit rivalries, and rich stories

But now elevated to a national championship stage with professional production,

Live commentary, and thousands of viewers tuning in via GameZone’s livestream.

How the 135 Elite Players Earned Their Spot

Before the physical cards were dealt in June, a rigorous nationwide online qualifier ran from April 25 to May 16, attracting thousands of aspiring GTCC Tongits players.

These digital rounds were the proving grounds, testing both consistency and strategy in multi-table matchups.

After weeks of grinding, accumulating leaderboard points, and surviving daily eliminations,

The top 135 players were announced on May 27. These standout competitors were then flown in or sponsored to attend the offline showdown in Metro Manila,

Earning the opportunity to represent their provinces, towns, and families in the most prestigious GTCC Tongits event to date.

The blend of online accessibility and offline prestige created a hybrid tournament model that many hailed as the future of competitive Filipino gaming.

The Format: A Fierce Gauntlet of Rounds and Rivalries

The structure of the GTCC Tongits Summer Showdown was meticulously crafted to ensure fair competition and maximum drama.

  1. Elimination Round

  • The 135 players were divided into three groups (A, B, and C), each comprising 45 participants.

  • Every group competed in three 20-round matches.

  • The top 84 scorers moved on to the next phase.

  1. Promotional Round – Phase One

  • Players were reorganized into 28 mini-groups of 3.

  • They battled in a head-to-head-to-head format, where only the strongest advanced.

  1. Promotional Round – Phase Two

  • From here, the top 30 performers moved into the Upper Bracket, while 54 were placed in the Lower Bracket.

  • The Semifinals featured 60 grueling rounds, designed to test endurance and mastery.

  • The Finals stretched to a staggering 100 rounds, where the ultimate GTCC Tongits champion emerged victorious.

At stake: a jaw-dropping ₱10,000,000 prize pool, with ₱5,000,000 going to the champion alone.

A Championship Venue Worthy of Legends

Hosted in one of Metro Manila’s most prestigious convention centers, the tournament space resembled a world-class poker championship

Complete with LED-lit stages, professionally designed game tables, referees, cameras, and livestream commentators narrating every critical move.

Hundreds filled the spectator gallery, while thousands more watched online via GameZone’s Facebook.

The excitement was palpable. Each flick of the wrist, each bold Tongits call, and every tension-filled stare added to the emotional rollercoaster.

A Champion with Heart: The Rise of Tatay Benigno

The spotlight of the Finals ultimately shone brightest on Benigno “Tatay Benigno” De Guzman Casayuran, a 62-year-old champion from Candelaria, Quezon Province,

Whose journey to victory was as powerful as it was improbable.

Facing severe financial constraints due to his wife’s ongoing battle with Stage 2 breast cancer, Tatay Benigno nearly withdrew from the tournament.

But with the help of donations and support from friends, family, and neighbors, he was able to travel to Manila, and history was made.

His gameplay was precise, calm, and surgical. After 100 rounds of the most intense Tongits action ever seen in a live setting,

He emerged as the GTCC Tongits first-ever offline champion, taking home ₱5,000,000.

But more than the money, it was his humble words that touched the audience:

“Para sa pagpapa-chemotherapy ng misis ko,” he said, his voice cracking with emotion.
